some quick portraits

I've been very lucky recently, because I've been able to invest in some fancy new toys - a brand new MacBook Pro and a Wacom Bamboo tablet! I feel very spoilt and happy! These are some of the first drawings that I've done with the tablet, they are not perfect, but I like them. Was going for a quick, rough look anyway. They are actually faces of my target audience, for a moodboard that I've had to put together for a presentation tomorrow... hoping it goes well!

Now that the Sustainable Design Showcase is over, I think it should be safe to publish this! These are part of the final submission that Lisa and I sent through to the competition.  These are the printed items, but we also designed a website and created an informative stop-motion animated video.

Hi there! What a mad week this has been (and today is only Tuesday!).

Here is the explanation to the Sailor Glen story from last week - my awesome design partner and friend, Stuart Bothma, and I have been working on a campaign to re-brand Glenryck Pilchards.
Our task was to reposition the brand as a top quality product, a tough job, since pilchards generally have quite low market value and are typically seen as the "poor man's protein". Apart from redesigning the labels, we also had to market the product to a new audience, single black south african mothers, from the age of 35 and above.

Our finished campaign proposal consists of the following: a series of print ad's, two television commercials, new package designs, billboards, instore promotions and a competition.

There are three 'flavours' or variations of products that Glenryck offer - Pilchards in tomato sauce, pilchards in hot chilli sauce and minced pilchards.

I got to design the labels and although this was pretty challenging, I really enjoyed doing it.
There are also some storyboards for the television spots, which I will upload a little later.

his name is Mr Glenryck, or Sailor Glen, as he prefers to be named.
Sailor Glen is about to become the new face of a brand of tasty pilchards. 

Makes a lot of sense doesn't it...

a little experiment

Hello!

Here is another illustration that just finished. I guess you could call it a self portrait. Kind of.
I made the original sketch for it months ago and until now it had just been taped to my wall, sitting in the "future projects" bank - I'm sure lots of people have "future projects" or "things in the pipeline" or as the other list on my noticeboard says, "personal creative projects"...

This is something that tends to happen a lot while you're studying (or at least it happens to me a lot), you're always so busy with college briefs and assignments that you don't really have much time or energy to do carry through your own, personal projects.

This weekend was the first in a long time that I had no homework. Nothing due in. Or at least nothing immediate... So I jumped at the chance to do something with this sketch.

A pretty literal take on how I feel a lot of the time. Drained.

New Project

A set of bicycles - part of a collaborative project with three classmates, Zulpha, Harriet and Lisa. 

The project is an online magazine, in the form of an interactive PDF. Our mag is called CLAN and is all about a "creative community"and basically showcases work and features interviews with some top class creatives.  

This issue of CLAN is "the bicycle issue", where each creative is depicted as a customised bike, reflective of their personality and unique creative style. The reader picks a bike, on the contents page, and the creative, then takes the reader on a tour through their "hood", which then leads up to the 'content' of the mag. 

I had a lot of fun doing these!

It Came In The Night

This is a poster that Jared, Dale and I worked on for our data visualisation project earlier this year and is basically a visual representation of the nightmares experienced by graphic design students, between the ages of 18 and 26.
