Glenryck Pilchards rebranding

This little story appears on the back of every can, in order to add some warmth and authenticity to the design

Hi there! What a mad week this has been (and today is only Tuesday!).

Here is the explanation to the Sailor Glen story from last week - my awesome design partner and friend, Stuart Bothma, and I have been working on a campaign to re-brand Glenryck Pilchards.
Our task was to reposition the brand as a top quality product, a tough job, since pilchards generally have quite low market value and are typically seen as the "poor man's protein". Apart from redesigning the labels, we also had to market the product to a new audience, single black south african mothers, from the age of 35 and above.

Our finished campaign proposal consists of the following: a series of print ad's, two television commercials, new package designs, billboards, instore promotions and a competition.

There are three 'flavours' or variations of products that Glenryck offer - Pilchards in tomato sauce, pilchards in hot chilli sauce and minced pilchards.

I got to design the labels and although this was pretty challenging, I really enjoyed doing it.
There are also some storyboards for the television spots, which I will upload a little later.

ahoy there

Hello, let me introduce you to a new friend of mine -
his name is Mr Glenryck, or Sailor Glen, as he prefers to be named.
Sailor Glen is about to become the new face of a brand of tasty pilchards.
Makes a lot of sense doesn't it...
I promise to explain further very soon -
sometime after Friday to be more exact.

Nonspecific type sample #9

I found two of these amazing pastel boxes recently when my dad was about to throw them away! I rescued them from a tragic end and now they each have a special spot in my room.

Nonspecific type sample #6

The packaging for this little glider is so much fun - and the glider worked pretty well too...
too well in fact, because it flew so far away that I never found it again!

Nonspecific type sample #1

Lately I have been becoming more and more obsessed with typography. What I love most is when you randomly spot some beautiful or interesting or clever type on something or at some place where you wouldn't normally expect to.  Yesterday was one of those lucky days - I spotted this type on the box of  Gatti's icecreams that my boyfriend bought for us.

Sweet typography + yummy-addictive ice lollies = triple double word score!

Here is the logo that goes with the packaging project that I just completed. The name, Intwasa, means "the calling" that one gets from the ancestors, summoning them to become a Sangoma or traditional healer.

The logo design is directly inspired by the wildebeest tail swish that Sangomas use in their rituals - both by the hair of the tail and the swishing motion it creates.

The type was all done by hand and is meant to loosely represent bones that are also used in ritual "throwing of the bones" ceremonies and the hair of the wildebeest tail as well.

Quite a simple logo, but  I think it's also pretty effective!

(I will post the rest of the packaging design very soon!)

Tissue box design

This is a project from earlier this year - we had to redesign a tissue box so that it was both visually exciting and had a second function once the tissues had been finished.

My design was for Kleenex's antibacterial tissues, and was inspired by vintage photographs of nurses in the 1940's and 50's. The outside of the box features the "Nurse Nancy" character with some helpful hints to fight colds and flu in the winter season.

Once the tissues have been used-up, you can cut out and make your very own Nurse Nancy doll!
